DRAFT
Unified Design System for Digital Product Cohesion
Overview
In response to inconsistencies across digital platforms following a brand redesign, a comprehensive Design System was developed. This initiative aimed to unify disparate style guides and ensure cohesive user experiences across all products.
Problem Statement
The organization faced challenges due to:
-
Divergent Styles: Multiple digital products operated with varying design languages, leading to a fragmented brand identity.
-
Brand Redesign: A recent overhaul of the brand's visual identity rendered existing style guides outdated and inconsistent.
-
Documentation Gaps: Engineering projects lacked a centralized, standardized documentation system, causing inefficiencies.
User Discovery & Research
Engaging with key stakeholders, including designers, developers, and engineers, revealed critical insights:
-
Designers: Needed a unified set of guidelines to maintain brand consistency across all platforms.
-
Developers: Sought reusable components to streamline development and reduce redundancy.
-
Engineers: Required a standardized documentation framework to enhance collaboration and project tracking.
Identified pain points included:
-
Inconsistent User Interfaces: Users experienced varied interfaces across products, leading to confusion.
-
Redundant Efforts: Teams often duplicate work due to the absence of shared resources.
-
Documentation Silos: Engineering documentation was scattered, making it difficult to access and manage.
Design System Development Approach
1. Audit & Analysis
-
Inventory Assessment: Conducted a comprehensive review of existing style guides, UI components, and documentation practices.
-
Gap Identification: Highlighted discrepancies between current assets and the new brand guidelines.
2. System Architecture
-
Modular Framework: Developed a scalable system accommodating various products while ensuring a unified aesthetic.
-
Component Library: Established a repository of reusable UI elements adhering to the updated brand identity.
3. Documentation Platform
-
Centralized Repository: Created an accessible platform for housing design guidelines, component specifications, and engineering documentation.
-
Standardized Templates: Introduced uniform templates for project documentation to ensure consistency and ease of use.
4. Implementation & Training
-
Collaborative Workshops: Engaged cross-functional teams in workshops to align on the design system's principles and applications.
-
Ongoing Support: Established channels for continuous feedback and updates to the system, fostering an environment of iterative improvement.
Impact & Results
-
Enhanced Consistency: Achieved a cohesive brand presence across all digital products, strengthening user trust and recognition.
-
Improved Efficiency: Reduced development time and effort through reusable components and standardized documentation.
-
Streamlined Collaboration: Facilitated better communication and coordination among teams via a shared design language and documentation standards.
Next Steps
-
User Feedback Integration: Collect and analyze user feedback to refine the design system continually.
-
Scalability Enhancements: Expand the system to incorporate future products and services seamlessly.
-
Automation Exploration: Investigate tools and technologies to automate aspects of the design and documentation process, further increasing efficiency.
EDUCATIONAL PROJECT - 2024
Meteorology App and Game
Developing an educational meteorology app and game for children.

Project Objective: To develop a design system for a meteorology app and game, tailored to the needs and capabilities of children, providing a playful and educational experience.
Solution: The solution involved creating a comprehensive design system, including guidelines for space, layout, icons, color palette, typography, design components, and character design.
My Role: UI/UX Designer
Execution Time: 1 month
Involved Team: The team included António Silva,
Augusto Zambello, and me.
